Grey Tape is my attempt to address the ubiquitous question, why does most of the music you hear on the radio sound the same, and beyond that, why does it feel like we’re compelled and inhibited by a set of emotions that simultaneously inspire us yet hold us back from evolving. When you examine the color grey it is synonymous with old age, illness, or dullness. My project attempts to dig deeper and beyond the negative connotation of the word, for there cannot be good without bad, and there cannot be youth, beauty, and health without old age, ugliness and illness. Thus, there is a certain beauty in the latter even if it exists only to help us better define the former.
Grey is a color intermediate between black and white, the area in which things are harder to define; an area where morals may be compromised, and social norms may be forgotten. My project skims the surface of this grey area giving you dreams and aspirations that may seem positive at first look but may ultimately lead to questionable decisions or emotional instability lead by obsession and extreme ambition. It gives you sins like lust and temptation that can grow into love and devotion; vanity and greed that has the potential to evolve into self awareness and charity. And ultimately I seek to find the balance by mentally and emotionally escaping the cycle of ups and downs, the happiness and depression, and looking within myself for ultimate peace; giving up the chase or the running and learning how to fly.
